Adult sign language learners will be introduced to deaf culture
as well as sign vocabulary and grammar. There will be ample time
for conversation practice to gain confidence and skill.

Teach Your Baby to Sign
Instructor: Elaine Shaw, licensed Speech/Language Pathologist
Course Description:
Learn how to communicate with your hearing baby before he/she can
speak, using sign language. Babies who learn to sign before they
are able to speak can communicate basic needs thus reducing frustration
for both the parents and child. This 2-hour workshop will give parents
and caregivers all the information and tools they need to start
signing with their baby. This workshop will also include ideas for
stimulating speech and language development. There is a $4.00 materials
fee payable at class time.

Assisting the Deaf Trauma Victim
Instructor: Elaine Shaw, licensed Speech/Language Pathologist
Course Description:
Deafness is an invisible handicap and provides special challenges
to the individuals providing emergency care. An understanding of
the communication methods used by persons who are deaf is important
in providing adequate and appropriate care. This 2-hour workshop
will cover topics pertinent to emergency medical technicians and
other medical personnel who may need to treat deaf individuals.
Topics covered will include; recognizing and communicating with
the deaf patient, do's and don'ts, and getting a medical history.
Some basic signs will be taught. Please note that this is not an
in-depth sign language class.
